Dispatch 38 - Mark Fish visits the expedition...
"Feeeesh!" roars the crowd as popular Bafana Bafana champion Mark Fish demonstrates his ball skills. Mark Fish is not only a Bafana Bafana champion - he's also a champion of the &Beyond Foundation who today have joined forces with the Boundless Southern Africa Expedition at the Chinotimba soccer field outside Mosi au Tunya - the smoke that thunders, the World Heritage Site of Victoria Falls. Mark is part of a team that together with Nando's and all our other caring South African sponsors are bringing soccer games to nine countries across Africa. The day starts with drum majorettes, xylophones and drums, the mayor of Victoria Falls, councilor Inkosilathi Jiyani opens the proceedings and Ronald Masuka, the popular headmaster of Baobab School is the MC, there's a presentation of five Boundless box libraries to primary schools. Yesterday outside the Victoria Falls Hospital life saving mosquito nets were distributed to a thousand mums with babies and Lifestraws for purifying water and avoiding cholera were handed over to the chief medical officer, at the eye clinic over a hundred poor sighted people received spectacles. In the grounds of the hospital soccer champion Mark Fish played with the kids and handed out soccer balls - it was an absolute buzz and a sign to the media that we need to support the changing times in Zimbabwe. The Victoria Falls is as beautiful as ever, the lodges, hotels, campsites and adventure sports centres all open for business and hanging in, keeping their staff employed, feeding their families and waiting for change. Tourism is their lifeline - lets try and keep it going.
Back to the Chinotimba soccer field, there's the spray of the falls in the background, the music is pumping, it's half time. Mark Fish is giving a little soccer clinic to kids in the corner of the field. The score is 1 to Matetsi, 0 to Victoria Falls Hotel - it's a nail-biting game, the sound of the vuvuzelas is deafening, the kids of the five primary schools display their art - the theme is the elephants of Victoria Falls. The judge of the Boundless Art Competition is internationally famous artist Larry Norton who lives at Vic Falls. There's 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes, we're into the second half. Tonight the expedition is being hosted by the Beyond Matetsi Water Lodge on the banks of the Zambezi - Siyabonga and Thanks to all the sponsors that are making it all happen...
We'll keep you posted...
