Dispatch 22 - Lemon Meringue Pie at the Blue Anchor
We reach the Katembe Ferry point on the South bank of Baia de Maputo in the late afternoon. Local Mozambican media has caught unto the expedition, and they're there with TV cameras and note pads. Fortunately Nando's volunteer Cesar Diaz in the true spirit of Mozambican flat chicken and peri-peri speaks good Portuguese and becomes our spokesman. We squeeze the Landies unto the ferry. I think back to the hundreds of other ferry crossings we've made in Africa. There's always a delightful buzz around ferries - money-changers, traders, travelers and tarts, and on the Maputo city side - Surprise! A long line of Land Rovers of every make and model, there's even an old yellow V8 complete with tropical roof that used to be Samora Michelle's bodyguard's vehicle, all part of a jolly bunch of Maputo Land Rover Club members led by a jolly fellow by the name of Nunu. They all gather around the bonnet of our Disco to endorse the expedition Scroll, then they escort us through the streets, a line of Landies that stretch for a few kilometers down past Club Naval, the beautiful old Polana Hotel and along the beachfront past the crowded veranda of Costa do Sol and along the series of really bad dirt tracks (seems like the Landy Club wants to give us a rough road experience) before escorting us into the grounds of the Blue Anchor Inn outside Marracuene. The Blue Anchor, owned by colourful characters Paul and Lizzie Hallows is always our expedition home from home. The dinner table groans under the plates of flat chickens and chips and curry prawns. As always they spoil us and we end the feast with Lizzie's special lemon meringue pie served with two scoops of ice cream. Then it's into Paul's domain, the famous Blue Anchor Bar. It's our last night with our team of Nando's volunteers who've been helping with expedition community days. Some of them had never been to the bush before, now they've had the experience of small tents and hard ground, cooking on an open fire and assisting the expedition in the One Net One Life Help Nando's Fight Malaria Campaign by distributing lifesaving mosquito nets to pregnant mums and children under the age of five together with important malaria prevention education and off course the fun of the Boundless Soccer days and Art Competitions. They're a team that is dedicated to using adventure to improve lives.
